Chairman Voices Financial Concerns

Chairman Voices Financial Concerns

Chairman Peter Marsden voiced his financial concerns at the recent Annual General Meeting, and pointed out that we need far more support from Stanley fans.

The club reported a loss of £400,000 for the financial year last term, and Marsden admitted that attendances so far this season had been 'very disappointing' and for him it was on the verge of 'heartbreaking' as despite lowering ticket prices in an effort to boost gates this term, the take up hasn't had the desired effect with the local community not responding and turning up to games more often.

The chairman said that Stanley were perfectly up to date with HM Revenue and custom payments, so fans didn't need to worry on that score, but down the line unless things change and Stanley don't receive greater backing and the financial benefits that would bring, he fears there could be trouble.

'We are up to date with tax but there could be problems ahead. I don't want a repeat of the SOS situation, which would be deeply embarrassing and humiliating for me. I don't want charity but is it asking too much of the people of Accrington to come to two or three games and support us? It would be a national disaster if anything happened to this club, now is the time when people can do something.'

Four years ago obviously the club ran into trouble with a tax bill and an appeal had to be made to raise funds towards a liability of £308,000 to save the club from going out of business.

Marsden adds that during his time as a director he's put in £200,000 to the club and £100,000 between July and April this year, but obviously he can't keep funding the club like, but even though his shareholder level is only 10% he felt he need to lead by example. Fellow directors have also put in £250,000 between them since last May, but the club needs to move towards being self sustaining.
