Beattie Pleased With Draw

Manager James Beattie has said he is reasonably pleased with the draw against York on Boxing Day having seen goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli recalled by Fulham on Christmas Day.

Bettinelli has been on loan with us since August and has made 19 appearances all in since joining the club, but with injury problems mounting for his parent club, they took the decision to recall the 21 year old as is their right.

But as Beattie explained to the press, it wasn't the Christmas present he was expecting when Fulham phoned as he's very sad to see the player leave given the role that he has played since coming to us but it meant he had to be straight on the phone to Andrew Dawber to inform him that he's be making his debut for the club.

'We are sad to see Marcus go and we will be keeping in touch with Fulham, but I rang Dawbs on Christmas Day and told him he was playing. He said it was the best Christmas present he could have asked for and all the lads were pleased for him.'

Beattie goes on to say that Dawber is an excellent professional and goalkeeper so he had no concerns in terms of throwing him in, he just would've naturally liked to have had more time to discuss the game with him in training first but he thought he played really well, and although he would've preferred to see us take all three points, he thought our defence was excellent on the day and that it was a 'gritty and honest' display from the players so that's all he can ask.

As for Southend being up next in the hectic festive fixture schedule, Beattie also told the Official Site that he had no concerns whatsoever about freshening the team up and rotating the squad somewhat because he trusts them all to do a job when called upon.

The gaffer obviously is targeting this game for a win, but he knows we must keep our mini unbeaten run going at the very least.
