Stanley 1-3 Carlisle Utd

1 - 3

Crown Ground

02/09/14; 7:45pm

Attendance: 818

The managerless curse stuck Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night as our Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign for another season ended after defeat to a managerless struggling league 2 rivals.

Carlisle headed to the Crown Ground having just sacked their boss Graham Kavanagh. After a bright start Accrington, not without some controversy mind, were eventually beaten 3-1 on the night.

We looked like inflicting more misery on our opponents, fresh from a five-nil hammering in the league on Saturday, when we opened the scoring through Marcus Carver (21) as he beat the offside trap to finish pasts Carlisle 'keeper Mark Gillespie.

Carlisle made the perfectly response though and hit back almost immediately as Josh Gillies cross picked out Anthony Sweeney (24) to beat Joe Lumley and level it up at one-one at the break.

Minutes into the second half and Carlisle were ahead. Gillies was again involved as his corner was headed across goal by Sweeney and with Kyle Dempsey (49) on hand to scramble home from the six-yard box to make it two-one to the visitors.

Shay McCartan came close to drawing Stanley level, but his effort was cleared off the line and Carlisle broke away and scored a third through Billy Paynter (70), which was high dubious.

Paynter looked to be well offside, all expected the flag to be raised as he headed home but it wasn't and referee Lee Collins allowed the goal to stand and that effort securing killed us off.
