Torquay top the table after first weekend

TORQUAY United lead the way in the 2010/11 npower League Two table after the first weekend, as they convincingly brushed Northampton Town aside in their season opener.

United included former Accrington Stanley loan star Billy Kee amongst their substitutes for the game as his team mates Kevin Nicholson, Chris Zebroski and Elliot Benyon fired the Gulls to their first three points.

It was a nightmare start for The Cobblers, who are now rooted to the foot of the table on goal difference after the game, and Town's manager Ian Sampson was less than impressed with his side's second half display.

'The pre-season performances count for nothing. It was an even game in the first half but the reaction to the first goal was the disappointing thing.' Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton.

Shrewsbury Town are also flying high after knocking three past League Two title contenders Bradford City, who took the lead early on thanks to a Thomas Adeyemi goal.

But then former Brighton and Hove Albion winger Jake Robinson got into the swing of things and notched up a hattrick, which was straight out of the top drawer.

Wycombe Wanderers made a winning return to life in League Two as they despatched Morecambe 2-0 thanks to a first half spot kick from debutant Scott Rendell, who sent the Chairboys on their way.

Jon-Paul Pittman scored a superb solo effort late on to confirm the victory.

Elsewhere there was victories for Chesterfield, Rotherham, Hereford and Port Vale who made the start to the season one to forget for Barnet, Lincoln City, Crewe Alexandra and Bury respectively.

The five remaining games in the fourth tier of English football, ended in stalemates.
